Paul Williams had already established himself as a prominent songwriter in the 1960s, penning hits for artists such as The Carpenters, Three Dog Night, and Barbra Streisand. However, he also had aspirations to be a performer in his own right. His debut album, "Someday Man," had been released in 1970 to critical acclaim, but it did not achieve commercial success. The album is mix of original songs written by Williams and covers of classic songs such as "I Won't Last a Day Without You" and "We've Only Just Begun," both of which he had written for The Carpenters.
